Life in Singapore

Life in Singapore

Singapore, home to more than 4 million people of diverse cultures, is a world-renowned destination with a vibrant and sophisticated image. It has a unique blend of culture, cuisine, arts and architecture and is buzzing with energy. This colourful, thriving multicultural city in Southeast Asia embodies the best of both East and West: diverse culinary experiences, fantastic shopping, an impressive array of cultural events and it is also home to some of the region's best museums.

Singapore is South East Asia's transport hub with excellent links to all parts of Asia and the world. It is also well known as a centre for global business and trade, as well as offering unique opportunities for entrepreneurs setting up their own business ventures. Singapore is one of the world's most developed economies with over 7,000 resident multinational companies and 100,000 enterprises, creating a continuously vibrant business environment. Singapore is a richly diverse city and recognises four official languages: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. English, however, is the language of administration and most commonly used in the country.
Global businesses will find it advantageous to site their headquarters in Singapore. Strong trade and investment makes Singapore the most competitive Asian country. The World Bank also ranks the Republic as the world's easiest place to do business.

Events in Singapore

The first ever Grand Prix run at night ran in Singapore in 2008 and over the past few years, Singapore has also attracted several big-name golf tournaments, like the women's Lexus Cup that pits Asia against the Rest of the World, and the HSBC Women's Champions. In addition to Formula One and golf this year, Singapore will host the first Asian Youth Games and the men's Junior Hockey World Cup, while 2010 sees the inaugural Youth Olympics held in the city-state.
Singapore is also in the process of developing a 1.87 billion-dollar massive new sports complex due to be completed in 2012. It will feature a 55,000-capacity stadium with a retractable roof, a 6,000-capacity indoor Aquatic Centre that meets world tournament standards, and a 3,000-capacity multi-purpose indoor arena.

Getting around

Singapore has an excellent public transport system, allowing you to get around the city quickly and cheaply. The INSEAD campus is just a short distance from the underground system, known as the MRT. Buses run frequently, stopping at convenient locations, and taxis are cheap and plentiful.
